Description:

Recognize ways that light changes the world around you and learn how to translate this experience into an abstract language for building powerful representational paintings. This 3-day oil painting workshop led by Cincinnati-based artist Emil Robinson is designed to help you gain a greater appreciation for the ways that light and color can transform your paintings. The workshop will include a combination of art historical precedent, non-objective color exercises, and observational painting. Participants will be introduced to a curated group of artists from throughout history who will guide our weekend. These artists will be studied in a number of ways through lecture and painting. Color will be analyzed on its own terms through small painted exercises. These discoveries will culminate in a series of observational paintings from the live model, allowing you to attempt to integrate the insights gained throughout the workshop. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just beginning your journey in observational painting, this workshop will introduce you to a new perspective on painting and how and why Emil has constructed this philosophy for his own work.

Manifest's new home on Central Parkway is a historic 1932 structure ideally suited to the various programs of the Manifest Drawing Center (and future Manifest Gallery). Even now, mostly unchanged from 93 years ago, it serves as a playful collaborator in our educational mission. Students and guests are inspired by both the content of our programs, and the spaces in which they occur.

Works by Emil Robinson

About the instructor:

Emil Robinson received his master of fine arts degree from the University of Cincinnati in 2006 and his bachelor of arts from Centre College in Danville Kentucky in 2003. He has taught as a professor of art and design for almost twenty years. In 2007 he received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation which allowed him to spend six months painting in London. In 2009, he was a prize winner in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Recently Emil has been chosen for solo exhibitions in London and the Taft Museum of Art here in Cincinnati. In December of 2024 Emil's painting became the winner of the 15th annual Manifest Prize, a significant international competition. He is the first Cincinnatian to receive this award. Robinson maintains his own studio in Cincinnati, Ohio and exhibits his paintings widely. This workshop will address some of the same questions he wrestles with in his own work.

Manifest is supported by sustainability funding from the Ohio Arts Council, and through the generous direct contributions of hundreds of individual supporters and private foundations who care deeply about Manifest's mission for the visual arts.
